BASIS WEIGHT – GRAMMAGE
Purpose of the test
This test is performed to determine the weight in g/m² of paper, solid board or folding board.
Procedure
Operate the instrument in accordance with ISO 536 and the manufacturer’s instructions.
Leave the samples exposed for 24 h to 23°C and 50% R.H., according to ISO 187.
Check the zero setting of the balance.
Cut 20 test pieces to the required size.
Weigh each piece to your normal precision.
Report 20 measures in g/m², their mean and standard deviation calculated to 3 significant figures.

Cut 20 test pieces to the required size for Levels 1, 2 and 3 and at least 10, if possible 20 test pieces for Level 4.

Levels
Level 1: 55.0÷65.0 g/m²
Level 2: 85.0÷105 g/m²
Level 3: 270÷290 g/m²
Level 4: 500÷700 g/m²
Reporting
20 valid results in g/m² for Levels 1, 2 and 3; at least 10 valid results in g/m² for Level 4, if only 10 results can be obtained for Level 4, it is recommended to copy these results to measurement 11-20. Calculate the mean and standard deviation to 3 significant figures.
